The last progression in our series of three, the Project Media progression, will provide students with the opportunity to continue to improve their cultural competence that began with Project Space and continued throughout Project Text. The primary text for Project Media is The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, written by Sherman Alexie. The exercises and culminating writing activity in this progression will challenge students to demonstrate their mastery of the fundamental writing skills they have acquired throughout the semester. Additionally, using an array of digital learning tools, students will learn innovative ways to engage with literature and exhibit their writing expertise.

Making Predictions – In-Class Activity
For the first activity in this progression, students will examine two visual artifacts from the primary text.
- The Book Cover
- An Illustration Created by the Central Protagonist
Students must examine the cover of the novel and the illustration created by the novel’s central character and write a 250-word analysis of the images. Students are expected to make predictions about the novel based on the images above and discuss what they believe the story will be about. Students are also required to address the significance of each item identified by the illustrator as a symbol of relevance to the story. Students will be provided 30 minutes for this writing activity.

GROUP ACTIVITY
Pair students in groups of five and distribute the following Eyewitness Report Activity Worksheet. Each group member is responsible for completing one category in the following worksheet. Groups will be provided 15 minutes to complete the worksheet entries. Each group will designate one member to present the group’s Eyewitness Report to the class.
HOMEWORK
PROJECT MEDIA – WRITING EXERCISE ONE
INSTRUCTIONS: Using the following handout, complete the Bildungsroman (coming of age) writing exercise. Students must write a minimum of 300 words and integrate a minimum of two relevant quotes from the primary text to receive credit for this writing exercise. In-text citations are required.
