Lesson 1 – Project Space

This Project Space progression will enable students to explore the notion of mythical spaces. Mythical spaces exist underground and within the cosmos and in water, forests, mountains, and temples. The study of mythical spaces will allow students to learn about the myths and folklore that shaped numerous other cultures’ beliefs, ideals, and traditions. The following carefully scaffolded lessons will not only strengthen students’ reading, writing, critical thinking, and research skills, but they will also broaden their worldview and enhance their appreciation of cultural diversity.

HOMEWORK:

Using your personal knowledge of American popular culture and the Internet, begin researching modern-day trickster figures. Select one modern trickster that interests you and start to compile a list of facts and traits about this character that make them a modern-day trickster figure. Pay special attention to the culture and space in which the figure resides, where he was born, details of his/her family life, and how this figure impacts the society in which they live. You will use these resources for an upcoming writing assignment.
